Istanbul ferries launch workout program for passengers

Residents of Istanbul do not have much time for a morning workout routine amid the hubbub of big city life. A new project aims to help them during the precious time they have during their day. “Sports in Ferry” launched by Istanbul City Lines, a branch of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) overseeing ferries operating on the Bosporus, has introduced ferry commuters to basic physical exercises they can do while traveling. Exercise instructors from Spor Istanbul, the sports department of the municipality, accompany passengers on their morning trips, teaching them exercises they can do without leaving their seats.

The project currently runs on ferry services between the Beşiktaş and Kadıköy districts on Monday between 8:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. and between Üsküdar and Eminönü between 9 a.m. and 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday. The IBB plans to expand it to other services soon.

Sinem Dedetaş, director of Istanbul City Lines, said in a written statement on Friday that the project sought to demonstrate easy physical exercises for passengers who can do them at home or at the office. “We ran a pilot project earlier and was motivated by the high turnout,” she said. Renay Onur, director of Spor Istanbul, said their purpose was to introduce sports to larger masses, and they were already running similar exercise programs in more than 60 parks and squares across the city.

Residential Co-Living Trend Accelerates in Asia

According to a new report by JLL titled “Bridging the Housing Gap“, millennials in Asia are now sharing more than work spaces and transport. They have turned to living together in a new form of shared housing where residents have common interests and lifestyles.

The research reveals that co-living is gaining traction in Asia, particularly in markets like Hong Kong and the greater China region, where housing affordability is a concern. While flat-sharing among young professionals and students is popular in many countries, what differentiates co-living spaces is that they are professionally managed rather than informally arranged.

Most operators highlight the community aspects of the service, which range from yoga classes, film screenings, meals and free drinks, through to networking events with guest speakers and workshops tailored to the specific interests of residents.

“For those locked out of the residential market, the emergence of the co-living model offers an affordable housing solution for their needs: an alternative to staying in the family home, sharing a rental unit, or living in a subdivided flat,” said Denis Ma, Head of Research, JLL Hong Kong. “In addition, the community elements touted by most co-living schemes have the potential to improve the overall well-being of residents.”

In Hong Kong, while co-living is still very much a new initiative, there has been an increasing rise in owners and investors converting their residential and hotel/guesthouse en-bloc properties into co-living schemes since 2015. The spaces are located primarily in traditional residential clusters such as Mong Kok, as well as neighborhoods close to higher education institutions including Hung Hom, Tuen Mun and Sha Tin.

In mainland China, the concept of co-living started with YOU+ International Youth Community among other operators that emerged in 2012. By the end of 2016, there were nearly 90 operators across the country. Vanke Port Apartment, one of the largest operators on the mainland, managed more than 60,000 units. Meanwhile, YOU+ operated 16 properties, Mofang expanded to about 15,000 units, ZiRoom operated seven properties and Coming Space managed 10,000 units.

“The demand from millennials for co-living is huge in mainland China. In the past five years alone, there were 43 million new graduates. Given the high housing prices across the country’s tier 1 and 2 cities, it will take at least three to five years for them to start purchasing their own homes. This means that many of them will have to rent or look for short-term alternatives. Therefore, co-living is definitely an attractive option,” explained Joe Zhou, Head of Research, JLL China.

Inspired by the co-working phenomenon, some operators in Asia have placed work and lifestyle together under one roof. India, for instance, currently has four start-ups that focus on co-living in Gurgaon and two others based in Bengaluru.

In Singapore, Aurum Investments, a sister company of co-working space Collision8, has invested in a new co-living startup, Hmlet. There is also a Beijing-based start-up, 5Lmeet, that extends beyond shared accommodation – it offers occupants an open office, as well as other amenities such as restaurants, gym and event space.

Investors converting to co-living

Bolstered by the barriers to homeownership and a housing shortage, the co-living market is proving to be an attractive option to investors and owners of existing properties, particularly in the hospitality sector.

“Smaller budget and boutique hotels are one of the first property types being converted into co-living spaces due to the similar unit sizes and mature operating teams,” said Zhou. “However, converting other properties to co-living has to go through a complicated legal and planning process, which increases the time and cost.”

According to Ma, “Another consideration is durability and obsolescence. The modern fit-out and finishes provided in many new co-living houses are what makes them attractive to users. Whether these shared spaces can maintain their appeal after several years of general wear and tear will also depend on how much operators invest in upkeep and maintenance.”

Turkey to host 300 percent more Indian weddings in 2019

India’s wedding organizers predict a 300-percent rise in Indian weddings held in Turkey this year, culture and tourism minister said Friday.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy met representatives from Turkish tourism industry and civil society in an event at the Chamber of Commerce in Bodrum, a touristic town of Muğla in the Aegean coast of Turkey.

Ersoy told reporters that his ministry expects 2019 to be a fruitful year for Indian weddings taking place in Turkey as well as the number of tourists from Iran.

“I am in touch with the wedding organizers from India. They predict a 300 percent rise. One of the airline companies in India has started its flights to Turkey,” Ersoy said.

“Several other airlines in India have also started to search the ways to fly to Turkey. There is a big interest.”

Turkey expects a fifteen to eighteen percent rise in early reservations this year, he added.

“We notice an increasing demand from Western countries and high-spending tourists,” Ersoy said.

Students around the world prefer Turkey for education

More and more foreign students are choosing Turkey to pursue their education, with more than 140,000 foreign students currently studying in the country

Turkey has become a favorite destination for foreign students thanks to its cultural, religious and economic strength and location. Currently, more than 148,000 foreign students study in the country, according to the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB).

He added that it was much easier to get a residence permit after registering in a university in Turkey as compared to Europe. Hasmuca, who graduated from the faculty of theology in Ankara University with a scholarship, said education in Turkey was also affordable. He mentioned the role of Turkish nongovernmental philanthropic organizations that they help foreign students pursue education. “For example, about 30 students, including me, continued education with the help of the Asma Kopru International Students Association,” Hasmuca said. The voluntary group provides dormitory and other facilities to foreign students in Ankara. He also mentioned that before foreign students coming to Turkey to pursue their education were seen as tourists, but that this perception had changed with the increasing number of students choosing Turkey for their education.

A student of political science at Ankara’s Yıldırım Beyazıt University, Mubarek Muhammed from Djibouti said he came to Turkey on the advice of his friends. “I had two options. I could have gone to France or the U.S., but I preferred Turkey for its cultural and religious features,” Muhammed said. He said that he would encourage students in Djibouti to come and pursue their education in Turkey.

Somali high school student Abdurrezak Muhammed also said that he would recommend Turkey to everyone in his country because of the fact that Turkey is also a Muslim country.

Ubeydullah Yusuf from the southern province of Pattani in Thailand, who applied to Ankara-based Yildirim Beyazit University’s Engineering Department, said: “Pattani has a lot of children who don’t get an education, there are economic difficulties. I would recommend they to come to Turkey.”

Mufizu Rhaman, a Rohingya Muslim, originally from Rakhine State in Myanmar, studying international relations in the same institution, said he came to Turkey due to difficulties his community was facing in Myanmar. He also thanked the Turkish government and people for their support for the uprooted Rohingya Muslim community.

3 Turkish citizens get Pakistans top civilian awards

Pakistan announced to confer its top civilian awards on three Turkish citizens, two parliamentarians and a top official in the Health Ministry, marking country’s 73rd Independence Day, on Aug. 14.

An official statement said that Pakistani President Arif Alvi has approved country’s third top civilian award Sitara-e-Quaid-i-Azam to Ali Şahin and Muhammet Balta, both members of Turkish Parliament, in recognition of their services for promoting friendship between Turkey and Pakistan.

Both of them represent ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the Parliament.

Former Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Şahin, is currently heading the Inter-parliamentary Turkey-Pakistan Friendship Group. Balta, a deputy from Trabzon, a city on the Black Sea coast of northeast Turkey, is former head of the same friendship group.

President Alvi also approved another third highest civilian award Sitara-e-Imtiaz to Selami Kılıç, who is heading the EU and foreign affairs in the Turkish Ministry of Health, for his services to Pakistan.

The awards will be formally given at a ceremony, to be held, on eve of the Pakistan Day, on March 23, 2020.

On the other hand, activities, such as theaters, cinemas, live concerts, exhibitions, communion, poetic concerts, art galleries, in which works of internationally famous artists are exhibited, show the meaning and importance of art in Istanbul.

CULTURE

Istanbul is the city which has held the title of capital city for three great civilizations with a deep culture of love and tolerance. Istanbul… The city of dialogue where religions, languages, and races have lived side by side in the same streets in peace and harmony. The city of freedom, opened by Sultan Fatih, has seen the end of one age and the beginning of another with its conquest. Istanbul has promised to give this experience to its visitors, and it has kept its promise.

Istanbul has been at the junction of great civilizations because of its geographic and strategic location and has hosted several beliefs and traditions of many people for ages. Being very unique from this angle, the city is a civilization on its own with its history, globally renowned historical artifacts, institutions, culture, and traditions. For this very reason alone, it is a city that had been the target of several sieges and which has been sacked and conquered.

Hosting the capital city of Rome, the Byzantines, and the Ottomans for almost 16 centuries, it had become one of the centers of Christianity under Emperor Constantine. After its conquest in 1453 by the Ottomans, it was considered as one of the most important cities of the Islamic World.

During the reigns of these Empires’, it was also the administrative center of each of its respective religions. It has held the Patriarchy of Eastern Christianity until today, errecting the first and largest church and monasteries of the Christian World on top of pagan temples. Istanbul then assumed its Islamic character with the decoration of artifacts, mosques, palaces, schools, baths, and other facilities under the Ottomans. The current ruins of churches have been repaired, restored, and converted into mosques almost a century after its conquest.

On the other hand, Istanbul became the center of the Muslim world when the Ottoman Sultans’ obtained the caliphate of the Islamic World until the first year of the Turkish Republic in 1924. Judaism anchored itself in Istanbul more than any other of the port cities on the Mediterrean. The Jews that were saved from the Spanish Inquisition with the help of the Arabs excaped and began a happy new life in this city.

Istanbul had a population of 1,078,000 in 1945. Internal immigration towards Istanbul increased after the 1950’s due to its being the fastest growing industrial center. As such, the city’s the population reached 1,533,000 in 1955. Its population continued to increase annually at an average rate of 0.040-0.050 percent in the following periods where it reached 7,309,000 in 1990 and 9,199,000 in 1997. According to the population census as of 2000, Istanbul had a population of over 10 million people.As of 2007, according to official census data based on the “Address Based Population Registration System, which was conducted by Turkish State Institute of Statistics” internal migration to Istanbul still continues at a great speed. Moreover, the study shows that the population of Istanbul has increased as much as the city of Bursa in the last seven years and has reached 12,573,000 people.

The increase in population in last seven years has been 2.5 million. The most populated county among the thirty two is Büyükçekmece, with the population being 304,685. Only two counties, Eminönü and Şile, experienced a decrease in population.The most populous county in Istanbul is Gaziosmanpaşa, with 1,013,048 people. The following counties are Ümraniye, with 897,260 people; Küçükçekmece, with 785,392; Kadıköy, with 744,670. Eminönü, one of the most historical counties of Istanbul and whose population reaches over one million people during the day, has only 32.557 people residing in it. Currently, 8,156,696 people live on the European side, and 4,416,867 people live on the Asian side of Istanbul. The total female population of the city is 6,283,073, and the total male population is 6,291,763.

In the last fifty years, 11 million people have migrated to Istanbul and people from the 81 different provinces of Turkey currently live there. The city has a population of 12,573,836 residents according to the latest count as of 2007. Istanbul is a mosaic city where people have migrated from the various provinces of the country, from Sivas to Trabzon and from Iğdır to Çanakkale. Of those people, only 2,167,572 people were registered to State Register of Istanbul. The reason that more people have registered their children to the State Register as Istanbulians is to solve problems of easily in terms of registers of persons. Among the provinces of the country, the one which has the greatest flow of migration is the city of Sivas. Approximately, 681,215 people living in the city are originally from Sivas. Following Sivas, is Kastamonu, with 516,556 people. The number of people living in Istanbul from Sivas, Sinop, Bayburt, Ardahan, Erzincan, Giresun, and Kastamonua are greater than their original provinces from which they came.

According to the study comparing the number of people living in Istanbul with their home city, 638,464 people currently live in the city of Sivas, whereas the number of people from Sivas living in Istanbul is 681,214. The second province following Sivas is Kastamonu, with a total of 516,556 people living in Istanbul, Giresun with a total of 455,393, Ordu with a total of 453,197, and Tokat with a total of 396,840. Hakkari and Burdur are the two provinces with the least number of people living in Istanbul.

According to the county distribution concerning the 32 counties of Istanbul, people from Sivas live mostly in Gaziosmanpaşa, which is the most crowded county of Istanbul. While the natives of Istanbul predominantly live in Kadıköy, those from Tokat predominantly live in Küçükçekmece, thos from Kastamonu live in both the Bayrampaşa and Fatih districts of the city. People from Sivas make of the highest percentage of internal immigrants in Üsküdar, Bağcılar, Bahçelievler, Kâğıthane, Sarıyer, Şişli, and Beşiktaş.The people from Giresun is the first in Eyüp, Beykoz, Zeytinburnu and Beyoğlu. The people from Mardin has a large majority in Eminönü and Fatih, which is one of the most important financial districts of İstanbul. The people from Malatya live in Esenler, those from Trabzon live in Güngören, people from Erzincan live in Kartal, those from Rize live in Maltepe, people from Erzurum live in Sultanbeyli and Pendik, those from Samsun in Tuzla, people from Ordu in Ümraniye, people from Ardahan in Büyükçekmece, those from Gaziantep in Çatalca, people from Tokat in Silivri, and people from Kocaeli predominantly live in Şile.
